I.
Storm evolution
- This afternoon (May 30), the low pressure area over the Hoang Sa archipelago strengthened into a tropical depression. At 1:00 p.m., the center of the tropical depression was at about 17.0 degrees North latitude; 112.2 degrees East longitude, over the Hoang Sa archipelago. The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression was level 6 (39-49 km/h), gusting to level 8; moving north at a speed of 5-10 km/h.
- At 7:00 p.m. on May 30, the center of the tropical depression was at about 17.5 degrees North latitude; 112.2 degrees East longitude, over the northern area of the Hoang Sa archipelago. The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression was level 6-7 (39-61 km/h), gusting to level 9; moving north at a speed of about 5 km/h.
- This afternoon (May 31), the tropical depression in the northern area of Hoang Sa archipelago has strengthened into a storm, storm No. 01 of 2024, internationally named MALIKSI. At 1:00 p.m., the center of the storm was at about 20.7 degrees North latitude; 111.8 degrees East longitude, in the sea south of Guangdong province (China). The strongest wind near the center of the storm is level 8 (62-74 km/h), gusting to level 10; moving north at a speed of about 15-20 km/h.
- Early this morning (June 1), after making landfall in the southern area of Guangdong province (China), storm No. 1 has weakened into a tropical depression.
II. DIRECTION AND RESPONSE
- On May 30, 2024, the Office of the National Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control issued Document No. 208/VPTT to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang on proactively responding to low pressure areas that are likely to strengthen into tropical depressions.
- On May 30, 2024, the Office of the National Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control - Office of the National Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue issued Official Dispatch No. 01/CD-QG at 4:00 p.m. to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang on proactively responding to developments of tropical depressions and heavy rains.
