Tuyen Quang: Prolonged drought, worried about losing corn

9:32:42, 17/05/2023 Dry weather and little heavy rain since the beginning of the year have caused thousands of hectares of corn to face the risk of yield reduction or even crop failure.

Dry weather, little rain affects the growth of corn plants at the right flowering stage and cannot set seeds and lose yield. Photo: Viet Bac

Tien Tien commune was originally a large corn basket of Son Duong district (Tuyen Quang province) because this locality has a large alluvial area along the Lo River. However, along with the reduction of arable land, the months-long drought has caused corn growers to worry about a low-yielding crop.
If at this time in previous years, the corn tree had raised a flag and sprayed a beard, this year the corn tree was only as high as a person's chest, even above the knee. All it means is that there is no rain, the trees do not have enough water to grow.
Mr. Tham Huu Dung's family (Rap Tien commune) has 11.8 hectares of corn grown for nearly 3 months, because there is no water, the corn plants grow poorly.
"There has never been a year where the drought has lasted as long as this year. Since the beginning of the season until now, the corn kernels have been planted in the ground for nearly 3 months, there has not been a single rain. I had to connect pipes and direct water to irrigate areas. corn near the house. However, it is just like salt left the sea "- Mr. Dung lamented.

At this time, the water of the Lo River is dry, making it difficult to irrigate agriculture. Photo: Viet Bac

Meanwhile, Mr. La Quoc Chinh - Head of Cay Xi village (Rap Tien commune) said that the whole village has more than 150 hectares of maize, the survey showed that about 50 hectares of land are at risk of losing everything. The rest are very lucky, probably only 30-40%.
According to Mr. Chinh, the Lo River is dry, and it is difficult to bring water to the fields to irrigate the fields, but it is expensive and unfeasible to drill water to irrigate. Maize has always relied on rainy weather, which usually rains this spring, but this year it's been extremely dry.
According to Mr. Hoang Van Nien - Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Son Duong district, the situation of maize is dry and underdeveloped in many communes in the area, especially the communes located along the Lo River.
In the immediate future, the Department of Agriculture will coordinate with localities to guide people to try to save corn areas that can be actively irrigated. The remaining areas will review, synthesize and report to the authorities for remedial and support measures.
The same situation also occurs in many other districts such as Yen Son, TP. Tuyen Quang. According to people, the sporadic small rains in recent times have not been able to moisten the soil to save the dry corn area.

With arid, low-yielding corn areas, even determined to be unable to harvest, it is recommended to cut down for animal feed. Photo: Viet Bac

Many corn growers worry that if by mid-May the weather continues to be unfavorable, without heavy rain, the spring corn crop will almost be lost. Because the plant flowers but cannot produce seeds because there is no water.
Mr. Bui Quoc Trung - Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuyen Quang province) said that the period when the maize plants bloomed again at the right time of the heat, lasted from the 15th to the 25th. 4 makes it difficult for corn to pollinate. Along with less rainy weather has affected the growth of maize, this is the cause of some corn areas of the localities being affected.
To ensure productivity and output, agricultural engineers recommend that people take advantage of all water sources for irrigation and moisture retention; apply irrigation methods sparingly to create conditions for the growth of plants.
In particular, for corn areas damaged by drought, early harvest as fodder for livestock to free up land, prepare conditions for new crops to compensate for the spring corn crop.
