The strong storm brought heavy rain and swirling winds in the states of Karnataka and Goa. At least 23 fishermen in Kerala state are believed to be missing. The Gujarat state government has evacuated more than 150,000 people to ensure safety.

Cyclone Tauktae is India's first strong tropical cyclone of this year's monsoon season. This storm is moving north, parallel to the western coast of India, causing heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in several states.

Typhoon Tauktae is forecast to make landfall in the coastal state of Gujarat tomorrow morning with winds of 155-165km/h, gusts near the storm's center of up to 185km/h.

Weather forecasts from the meteorological agency also warn of the risk of houses being destroyed and roads flooded. Rail service is likely to be disrupted until May 21.

On May 16, India's National Crisis Management Committee chaired a meeting with local states, saying that nearly 80 disaster response teams have been deployed in different states.

Rescue and relief teams from the army, navy and coast guard, along with ships and aircraft, have also been mobilized.
