At the Dau Cha - Bien Truong canal (in Bien Truong hamlet, Lam Hai commune), landslides have been occurring for many years. According to local residents and authorities, in the past 6 years, landslides have eaten into the mainland by nearly 10 meters. Faced with the increasingly serious risk of landslides, people have had to move their houses inside the shrimp pond to limit risks to property and life.

Mr. Dinh Van Ngon, who has lived here for many years, said that before, the Bien Truong River was very small, his house was built along the riverbank, but it was eroded several times. “The first time it was eroded around 2-3 am, the second time the whole house was eroded into the river. Seeing that, I built my house on a square piece of land for safety,” Mr. Ngon shared.
Also in this area, from the State budget, the locality invested in repairing and reinforcing the tidal barrier of the Bien Truong canal with a length of over 2,000 m and a width of 3.5 m. However, the black soil part was not completed for long before erosion occurred.
“For areas at risk of erosion, the locality proactively reinforced and warned in advance, which was fine; landslides mainly occurred at deep-lying areas that were not detected. In this case, the upper part collapsed very quickly, so the prevention and control work is very difficult," said Mr. Trinh Thanh Thoang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dat Moi Commune.
Mr. Le Van Sin, Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that recently, the landslide situation in the area has been very complicated, affecting the lives, activities and property of the people. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 15 landslides, affecting 240 m of traffic roads and some black dirt roads and other ancillary works, causing damage of over 750 million VND.
In the face of natural disasters, especially increasingly unpredictable landslides, proactively mobilizing all resources and being ready to respond to situations to minimize damage is always a focus of the sectors and levels in the district. After the landslides occurred, the District Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue advised the District People's Committee to direct relevant departments, branches, and People's Committees of communes and towns to promptly mobilize forces to support people in overcoming the consequences, in order to soon stabilize production and life.
The forces enthusiastically participated in overcoming the landslide.
Lieutenant Le Van Duan, Captain of the Reconnaissance Team of the Nam Can Port Border Guard Station, said that Lam Hai commune is a coastal border area under the management of the station, so the unit is always ready. If there is a situation of natural disasters, landslides, storms, it will promptly mobilize forces to work with local authorities and relevant departments and agencies to support people in moving their belongings, assets, etc.; especially, protecting people's lives is the first priority.
