Heavy rain causes widespread flooding in Hai Phong

12:42:44, 27/08/2021 The rain from dawn to nearly 10 am on August 26 caused widespread flooding in Hai Phong city.

Flooding occured on many roads in Hai Phong

According to the Hydrometeorological Station of the Northeast, the amount of rain measured at 8 o'clock was about 110mm. Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding, especially in the inner city. Many streets were flooded from 50-70cm such as Dinh Tien Hoang, Cau Dat, Lach Tray, To Hieu, Cat Dai, Da Nang...

Many traffic vehicles stalled, causing yoke on many roads; Thousands of households were flooded with water, many household appliances were badly damaged by water, affecting people's daily life.

According to Hai Phong Sewerage One Member Limited Liability Company, the Hai Phong urban drainage system has been built for decades, both to drain rainwater and waste water. Much of the rainwater and wastewater is discharged directly into rivers or to surface water systems and then into the river through canals and sluice gates.
From February 2021, Vinh Niem wastewater treatment plant was handed over and put into operation with a capacity of 36,000m3/day. Wastewater is collected mainly in Le Chan district, partly in Ngo Quyen district.

In recent years, the urbanization rate of Hai Phong has increased rapidly, so the demand for drainage and wastewater treatment has also increased.

The process of urbanization causes ponds, lakes, canals and ditches to be leveled and narrowed; The land is concreted, the road is asphalted, increasing the impermeable surface... These are the causes of flooding in Hai Phong when it rains heavily and for a long time.
