This is an initiative of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The meeting with the participation of the relevant agencies, ministries: Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Information and Communications, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam Television and Donors: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), the Vietnam Red Cross, non- governmental organizations like Oxfam, Care, CECI , World Vision, Action AID etc) and the media.
In the opening speech of Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuc, Director of DMC has confirmed the importance of information for natural disaster prevention and mitigation. The co-chair Mr. Vu Kien Trung, Deputy Director of Standing Office of Central Committee for Flood and Storm Central - Deputy Director of DDFMSC also agreed that, Vietnam is one of the countries which has to suffer from severe impact of natural disaster and climate change, in this context, information is very essential, information among agencies and information from management agencies to citizens.
The meeting introduced Vietnam DRR project portal, in which, Vietnam is one of five countries in the Asia Pacific region were selected for pilot implementation. The outline of the framework for monitoring and evaluation for the National program on CBDRM disaster database in Vietnam also introduced in the meeting.
The main content of the meeting include:
- Introduction of Vietnam DRR project portal and the system on natural disaster information management in Vietnam.
- Discuss the need and approach to develop a system to enhance cooperation for disaster risk reduction in Vietnam.
- Identify next steps to build the system.
The development of a common database on projects for natural disaster risk reduction which has been implemented in Vietnam, including programs and projects of governments, organizations and sponsors are needed for management, coordination and avoid duplication, concurrently, this information will help strengthen the cooperation of agencies, organizations and local authorities in this field.
The meeting received many comments of participants on the needs and approaches to access information of projects on disaster risk reduction in Vietnam. Based on this contribution, the Vietnam DRR project portal is necessary to be developed to serve for management of coordination and cooperation.
