Sandstorm affects more than 400 million people in China
10:7:59, 20/04/2023
A large-scale and intense sandstorm is occurring in China, causing severe air pollution, affecting about 409 million people in 15 provinces.
Meteorologists said that this time the sandstorm originated in southern Mongolia, then moved south and affected most of the areas north of the Yangtze River as well as the capital Beijing.
In some localities, the concentration of PM10 fine dust exceeded 2000 micrograms/cubic meter, reducing visibility below 500 meters.
This is the second sandstorm this year in China. In recent years, the number of sandstorms in the country has quadrupled compared to six decades ago. This is due to rising temperatures and lower rainfall in the deserts of northern China and neighboring Mongolia.
